Why is China’s Edtech booming faster than the US?

I was rather shocked by the recent reports of China’s large edtech investments. In a recent article, it described how China has surpassed the US in Edtech investments. China has invested over $5 billion dollars in educational technology which is the highest it’s ever been in the history of edtech investments. While the US has hit an all time low on E-Learning investments. Why is China’s Edtech booming at such a quicker rate than the US?

It's the leapfrog effect.  The educational system in the United States for middle class people basically works, and can more or less handle the demand from current users.  There are serious, serious problems with providing education to the poor, but the poor don't have money.

In China, you are adding about 100 million people to the middle class each decade, and the traditional educational systems are getting completely overwhelmed as you have parents that are interested in spending their new found wealth on education for their kids.  Some of the demand is spilling over to the United States, but even that's not enough to keep pace with demand.

In China and most Asian countries higher education is valued a lot more than it is in the US.  Even poor parents strive to get there kids a good education.

Fellow EdTech Entrepreneur here. This was an eye opener for me-


  • Most entrepreneurs in education build the wrong type of business, because entrepreneurs think of education as a quality problem. The average person thinks of it as a cost problem.
  • Building in education does not follow an Internet company’s growth curve. Do it because you want to fix problems in education for the next 20 years.
  • There are opportunities in education in servicing the poor in the US and building a company in Asia - not in selling to the middle class in the US.
  • The underlying culture will change and expose interesting opportunities in the long term, but probably not for another 5 years.
