I started Origami Retail Solutions, Inc. in the spring of 2014. We are an Retail Operations Management platform focused on the grocery industry.
I was lucky enough to have pulled together a great founding team and we have the best advisory board I could have ever hoped for and who have stepped in to help fill gaps and holes in our leadership when we've needed it.
We bootstrapped our company, a feat when you consider we are a deeply integrated, enterprise company with very complex machine learning neural networks, analytics, all pulling data from outdated systems built circa 1985. It has been a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (and there were many), but we did it. The next five years of our roadmap are planned and ahead of us and it's going to be a wild ride.
My advice for new entrepreneurs: quit now and find a good job. It's hard. It hurts. You'll lose friends. You may lose your family. You'll lose decades off the end of your life. I guarantee you'll lose your sanity. But if you still insist that somehow you're the exception to the rule and decide to do it anyway, then you're in good company. You have to be willing to work 18 hours a day and sacrifice everything you have and love for your dream. Only then and with a little luck do you have a 1% chance of succeeding. They say that 90% of businesses fail, which is true, but they don't account for all the 'idea startups' that never actually get off the ground. So honestly you have a 1% chance IF you work your ass off. If you have a solid idea and the right team, then it's all in the execution.
Important note: When you feel like you are burned out and just want to give up. Don't. EVER. Even if you fail completely, you can look back and say "I gave it everything, it didn't fail because of me". And when it does fail (I didn't say 'if'), pivot and keep trying. Fire your team and start again. Change ideas, change industries, change everything. But don't give up. If you have the gumption to call yourself an entrepreneur, then come hell or high water, do it.
** Just an FYI, I am NOT looking for a co-founders or partners. I'm also not interested in joining your startup, advisory board, etc. I'm busy working my ass off building my company, but I like answering quick questions here. :)
