I'm a biz dev fanatic, an artist and a visionary. I've been working non-stop over the past 7 years attempting to launch a community marketing website, A Greater Town, which gives a home page to every town, and allows for hyperlocal networking - with marketing at its basis.
Raised a small amount of money and got a basic prototype built: AGreaterTown.com . It's not too pretty or user-friendly yet but the engine is powerful. It's been cranking along for 6 years with hardly any maintenance, and it has never broken down. The same dev coded Vitals.com and Moonit.com. He's a senior dev which designed his own framework in PHP and elements of Drupal.
The social element never got built, but we put it out there unfinished just cause I couldn't stand looking at it in the closet. People started to use because it turned out we built a monster Google magnet for local search: http://www.agreatertown.com/montclair_nj/testimonials_000415216
The idea is that you can market yourself or your customers by category and location, and pull in relevant local data into your profile that help define who you are, again based on category and location. These interconnect, forming the basis of a social network built on a grid of these two coordinates.
Have tried to raise a larger chunk of money but it proved to be a nightmare. In the meantime I have focused my attention on building strategic relationships in the SoLoMo space, and fine-tuning the business model. We have a huge number of partners ready to give us data, and have identified 17 ways to monetize the hell out of this site - while making something very valuable for the community at large. It's literally a gold mine with heart, waiting to happen.
Along the way, we were able to acquire the important artist community website, formerly known as myArtspace.com.
7 years in the making, 80,000 members, 160 countries, 1,000,000 images, and $1,000,000 in development: www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTInZ7j2LIk
The site is currently down. It can only be seen through cached pages: http://web.archive.org/web/20081121015826/http://www.myartspace.com/
So we have a ton of raw material to work with. Really, the only thing we need at this juncture is a coder! We've got everything else ready to go, and the site is already being well used. We just need to ramp it up and tighten things down, then this baby can take off.
I'm so happy I found this site - wish it had been 7 years ago - and I look forward to connecting with some great people.
