Cheaper SMS service?

Does anyone of you have any suggestions for cheaper SMS service other than SNS. I recently launched a community alert system called yellert (http://www.yellert.com) and noticed that my SMS bill from amazon is pretty high. I like the reliability aspect of it but is there any better alternative that's cheap and equally reliable. Any open source alternative?

cheers

You should look at Twilio. They have competitive SMS rates, but its still about 1 cent per message which adds up quickly if you're broadcasting alerts. SMS is a legacy technology, and frankly a rip off. IMHO, you should really look into push notifications for native apps, or just use email. Email transmittal services like Mailgun cost around $1.00 per 10,000 message sent (less with volume discounts), so it reduces the cost of message transmittal by a factor of 100. Email gets set as quickly as SMS in most cases to smartphones, and you have no limit on message length, attachments, etc.

Att direct seems like a clever solution. I am already using emails. But when you want to receive an immediate attention, SMS seems to be the way to go. WIll look at twillo today and see if they make any sense pricing wise.
Thanks a lot guys!!
