Embeddable community support?

We have a two-sided marketplace currently with a single buy-side community and are migrating to a model with a number of private buying groups. Each of these groups needs their own private communication mechanism and I'm trying to figure out some options to keep everything within the site.

Something like you see in Meetup.com, although maybe a more modern version (e.g., like an embedded Slack). Has anyone either seen sites that do this well or, for extra credit, software/services that make it easy to extend existing sites?

Michael, Zulip is now open source (pretty much like Slack)

For web, check out Spot.IM. For mobile, check out AppFriends.me.

If you want an embedded discussion forum, Discourse is the best.

If you want an open-source embedded chat app where you have full control over the data, RocketChat is the best choice because it's built with Meteor, a JavaScript-only platform. Dropbox's Zulip is built with Python and JavaScript, so you'll have to expend more engineering resources to extend or configure it.

I have a virtual meetup app where people can interact with each other by video.

I also have a web app where people within a group can discuss with each other by video  and the admin can talk separately with each group.

Just a quick pass through everything but nothing seems to support my scenario where I need each of the user-defined groups to have its own community space that is created automatically.

Seems like everything's set up for one big community on a site.
