General Liability Insurance for an event

Allison Sheren Ruby on Rails Software Developer

I'm based in DC and am participating in an upcoming festival. The festival organizers need every vendor to have a general liability insurance policy. Does anyone know if I can do this just for the event? and any suggestions of who to contact in DC would be great.

Thanks!

An entrepreneur friend recommended Philadelphia Insurance Co. to me for event-based (or short term liability) coverage. She's used them in the past and found them easy to work with.  A lot of fitness professionals (trainers and coaches) use them for liability insurance as well. Looks like they have a wide range of coverage types, including events.

I'd love to know who you pick!

Are you looking for event liability insurance (e.g. in case somebody gets hurt at this festival)? Or are you looking for general liability insurance (e.g. in case someone gives you private data at this event and you share it by accident)?

Yes. Per event insurance can be expensive but can be easily purchased. Contact a local insurance agent and you should be good to go. Typos courtesy of my iPhone

Hi Allison Yes you can buy a policy just for the event. Many companies do this. You can check into ISES (international Special Events Society) for a referral, or MPI (Meeting Professional International) or just start with your local insurance agent. ISES & MPI both have local chapters. ASAE (American Society of Association Executives) may also be worth a try. These policies are typically not too expensive. Karen

Alison, I don't know the nature of your venture but a festival could be a nonprofit. There's a guy I used when setting up a nonprofit in Northern Virginia. He specializes in insurance for nonprofits and has been great. Give him a shout if what I describe fits your bill.
