I use a number of web extensions. I love them. I also don’t pay for any of them. I know that there are thousands of these things, so how do they make money?

Browser extensions are generally made to serve one or more of the following purposes...

  1. A SAAS business makes browser extension as part of their service offering (eg., Evernote, Wunderlist). These businesses make money by selling the service
  2. An individual or a web development company might make an extension as a side project to beef up their portfolio. This could serve as a medium for getting new clients
  3. There are also paid extensions on the Chrome web store. So this is a direct monetisation strategy
  4. You could setup ads inside the extension's UI somewhere. I haven't seen any extension with ads yet. Adsense is a standard ad platform, but they are still working on providing an implementation for browser extensions
