The question you should be asking is not how much it costs to build the app, but how much marketing will cost to get people to use the app and how you will differentiate from your competitors. Quoting big industry numbers simply demonstrates that you don't understand the basic business economics yet and are being motivated by the wrong things.

Folks rough estimates are about right $20-$30K, but I would say this is per platform + backend. So, your MVP for let's say iOS will probably cost ~$25K + another $10-15K for backend. If you want to move in the direction of a Web platform for your MVP, it might cost you a bit less. If you need help in doing deeper evaluation of your needs, you can go through a Discovery phase in identifying all the necessary features, user stories, functional diagrams and cost. To all the people responding with estimates: in what country are you assuming development will happen? In the US, developers will average $100/hr vs maybe $10-15/hr for developers in APAC. If you are projecting a cost of $30-40,000, is that assuming $100/hr dev cost?
