I'm interested in recommendations/advice for solutions that we can integrate that will let us display (for our users) recent activity for designated actions, notifications via email/sms, in app messaging etc.

We have employed WordPress with BuddyPress to convert WordPress into a social media environment for Neighborbee.com. You can join Neighborbee.com to play with the site and see what features BuddyPress offers natively. We did customize WordPress/BuddyPress onboarding, so all of the zip code/street address functionality is custom. All of the profile level features are generally BuddyPress.

The site is in beta and is limited to NYC zip/address hives.

Ning still exists but it's been dumbed down and, in my humble opinion, very poorly done.  I tried it recently for a project thinking it would be a good MVP solution but wasn't even close to what I needed.
