Rough budgeting for sponsorship

We're building a marketplace for group activities that has the potential to incorporate sponsorship at some point in the future. The sponsorship would be goods (e.g. Pop Chips for an event, Nike swag for completing a race) or discounts (e.g. 15% off supplies at Lowes).

Can anyone share knowledge of how these deals are structured? In particular, what kind of revenue comes through these deals? We see other businesses monetizing through sponsored rewards, so there must be something. At this stage, just having a ballpark would help us set strategy.

Thanks, Karen, that's helpful. I'll quickly admit I know little about this area -- I even wonder if sponsorship is the right term.

I just found an article from a couple years ago about Kiip, which uses this model: "Brands will pay when a user signs up for a reward, from 25 cents to $3 per engagement." (http://techcrunch.com/2011/04/10/kiip-is-an-entirely-new-mobile-ad-model-real-life-rewards-for-in-game-achievements/)
