Virtual hackathon - experience with this?

I've just been invited to participate in a virtual hackathon as part of a friends team. I have to admit, I didn't know they existed and it looks fun - plus I'd love to see my buddy succeed and I'm happy to help.

Has anyone participated in one of these? Any advice on how best to add value? I'll have the product development hat in this case.

First, throw out any expectation of ownership or launching a company from this exercise. Once you get rid of those expectations you can really have fun. I was under the misconception people really wanted to build something in the one I attended. We actually won the competition but it turned out the two biz dev guys were testing the waters for their concept and just wanted to have a team put an in depth presentation / demo together for them. After we won I thought we had a viable start up and thought we'd get rolling. Instead, the two biz dev guys went their way and didn't even tell the group they were pitching it elsewhere. Since the rest of the group were just kinda helping out on the weekend, hey had no expectations really so it died out.

Just set your expectations first. Maybe even discuss it with the group.

"Virtual Hackathon" << interesting.

Does that mean every individual is remotely connected or will you be in the room with your team? (or some mashup of both?)

Sorry to ask a question and not answer yours, but I love hackathons and a remote one sounds fun and powerful due to its scalability.

It means virtual - every individual is remotely connected, generally via a Google hangout etc.

I haven't tried this but like the idea. Cheaper than renting a co-working space in LA!

Yes, I can see that. No expectations of ownership here - as I mentioned its helping a friend but this is good feedback to pass along. Thanks!
