There are more than 7,000 accelerator programs, but many entrepreneurs are looking for assistance beyond what accelerators typical offer. For you, as an entrepreneur, what are accelerator programs missing?
I can't speak for every accelerator programme in the world but I know a couple. While I thought they failed to encourage people to come up with great ideas or find real customer problems to solve, now I think they fail in filtering who can start taking those programmes.
I think an experienced entrepreneur actually can see a real customer problem, come up with a good-enough idea in a couple of weeks and create a great business out of it. But for a beginner, that's quite not possible and the reason is just a mindset that needs to evolve more.
Some, but certainly not all are missing the personal touch - where the Accelerator team actually care and where, as a start, you are not just another number.
No, there are a few thousand incubator programs, a very small number of which are accelerators (closer to two hundred, in the USA). What defines an accelerator is that the group invests directly in the participants companies. Incubators do not invest.
Accelerators offer maximum support, but usually concentrated in specific skill areas (one or two of the six foundational business skills). Incubators often offer very little support other than a common environment.
If you get the terminology correct, you might have more success with your survey of the community. There is already a lot of discussion on which support services are most needed by startups who participate in either type of program. It's very easy to find and widely written about. You can even find specific wish lists and ratings for individual incubator and accelerator programs.
