Depending on your buyer - the most effective way to generate leads today is inbound marketing. That is, creating a digital asset (ebook, webinar) that educated people for free and then once they know you/your brand - you can try to sell them your product. There are many ways to reach your audience once you have created that asset: - partners who already have a base list (a company that complements your product) - media outlets that your target market consumes (e.g. Inc for entrepreneurs, dbta for data professionals etc) Good luck & happy to help further. Sachin, there are many tools you'll be advised to consider, from Hubspot, Marketo, to Salesforce, and others. However those are great tools, the price for suite like solution might be bit too steep for some SaaS companies.

Alternative for SaaS companies regardless their size and location is bring website tracking, lead generation, lead nurturing and lead management as well as customer intelligence into one platform.

Once capture business visitor at your website, it will enrich the IP with following data:

  • Address
  • Contact details
  • Company info
  • Revenue
  • Number of employees
  • Contacts to key decision representatives

You will know from where your business visitors came to your website and what actions they took on your website. report:

  • Referrer URL
  • On site behavior
  • Time spent on page

What makes outstanding tool is the ability to track behavior of your newsletter recipients and app users. Overall provide SaaS companies with detail analysis on user behavior so they can prevent churn.

Are you referring to what "practices" you should employ (e.g. "inbound marketing") or literally if one should use x product for capturing leads on your website, y product to store those leads, z product to react to triggers and send out automated emails, etc.?

Depends on your  target market and product offering.

With that said, a combination of Marketo for lead generation and Salesforce for your CRM is pretty hard to beat.

If you want amazing tools that are integrated, affordable, and will allow you to crush it with inbound marketing - as well as the training that spells it all out - check out - assuming you're running a WordPress site. Do this before spending thousands on HubSpot, Markeo, or anything else.

I was the sales manager at a SaaS based company.  We used a tool called RS Lead Extractor.  We then took those leads and put them into excel sheets and imported them into our CRM.  After that I broke down the sales team into two groups.  I took one group and had them set appointments for the strong closers on our team. Once the lead showed up for the software tour over gotomeeting, the closers would then try to close them.  We found about 1.5% on cold calls to sales.  Not great but something to strive for.

For SaaS based business, the top converting customers come from effective content marketing but again this should be done in a right way. Content Marketing takes time and good investment, this also creates digital asset for you over time.
Affiliate can be other channel which you can leverage.
Apart from this you need to be completely aware about your customer personal and buying behaviour. This help in long term.
Hope my 2 cent will be helpful for you.

I personally discover things through TechTarget. You may check topics on its website and if it covers topic that matches your app.
