Who do I need more: CEO or good salesman (to represent us locally in US)?

I have a small team, not even a company yet, we are VR (virtual reality) enthusiasts, who've been developing VR games for mobile devices lately. I was lucky enough to sell couple of our games to bigger company and get few more orders from them, but I feel that we still miss lots of opportunities.

My point is that VR is growing very fast and can be used not only for games but in different markets like real estate, healthcare, education, sports, retail, etc. The problem is that we lack communicative skills to sell our services (I speak English, but I'm not a native speaker and not a very good salesman too plus I have such feeling that Americans trust Americans more, maybe I'm wrong of course). So I'm thinking that I need someone who will be able to help here, but not sure who do I need more at this point: CEO or good salesman. Basically I need someone who will be finding possible clients, making meetings and getting new contracts for development of VR apps for us.
I'm based in the USA, San Diego, California and wanted to start from this area first, then expand. 

Any advises on who do I need more and what is the best way to find that person?

(1) If you don't have a company yet, but you have been selling successfully, organize yourself and team into a company fast before you run into tax, liability, and securities problems; (2) find a CEO with a sales background (in a start-up, the CEO/President is the chief salesman anyway). In my opinion, the first thing you need is a clear statement of who you are as a company, and someone who can communicate that to all concerned so everyone can be on board and serving that mission. If you can do that, perhaps you are the CEO. If not, I think the CEO should be your first hire. The CEO must be someone who can define and communicate that mission, and can create an organization which effectively deals with all the complexities of sales, creativity, finances, legalities, taxes, etc. This will keep the company focused and out of trouble. Then the sales team can go to work, knowing, in the big picture, what they are working to accomplish rather than just going out and selling your apps and services without knowing where.the company is or wants to go.

Hi Paul, A good CEO should also be your best salesperson as it starts from the top the culture, alignment, direction and go to market strategy. Not sure why you are only starting from San Diego as the VR market is Global / National. Where is the product being produced and manufactured? You need someone to play a role of an evangelist, who is very good at explaining the value prop. It is a talent, and if I were you, I would put the customer skills and domain knowledge first. I say a good salesperson who can also develop the market, not just close the deals. However, salespeople tend to lose strategic focus sometimes, so you might want to also take a look at VP of Product option. This role will attract folks with Product Management background and with VP or CEO ambitions. Many of them can close deals just as effectively as salespeople (if not better) but maintain strategic focus. And they are good at articulating value prop to the market.

Both, but the timing of when you bring on your Salesperson matters. Your product idea needs to be well formed & have a reasonable development plan and realistic milestone dates. A good startup Salesperson is someone articulate, passionate for the product, and can enthuse the customer with the vision of the product & the people. Bring them on when the plan is looking solid. Before that, the CEO needs to be Salesperson #1 -- if he can't sell the product or service, you have a problem.

Dear Paul, I read your request with much interest. At this stage I do not think you need a CEO. Just the fact that you can articulate the specific need you see for your company will make you a good start up CEO. Later perhaps add a CFO and COO then stay on as visionary CEO. A company needs all such disciplines. When you get to public listing things get more complicated which in itself will pose more challenges. How do you find a good salesperson? I have to almost bite my tongue....and say you have just found one. I was very successful in leading a small California based company to triple its sales in 3,5 years. It is not always true that Americans trust Americans. I am native Dutch and with honesty and integrity I was able to forge good long term relationships. It depends a lot on being able to understand and respect culture,adapt to langue (a local accent/joke go a long way) and customs. Then, you are right only then will you be able to sell your products. You either need an amazing salesman who aspires to grow into a CEO, a talented marketer that can also execute sales or a CEO / VP Sales that is willing to grind it out for you until you are up and running.
